Recreational Equipment Incorporated is the "Grand Daddy" of outdoor sports stores. This is a great source of information, backpacking food, hardware, boots, clothing and rental equipment. Many free workshops are held through out the year. Started as a consumer co-op, REI members receive a "rebate" at the end of the year in the form of patronage dividend averaging about 10%. Membership is not necessary to purchase.

A 16/The Camp

This is a great store specializing in backpacking and mountaineering with a good selection and knowledgeable staff. Only drawback is the closest location, Costa Mesa, isn't convenient for many of us. Big North Face dealer. Free slide shows and workshops offered throughout the year. If you get a chance check it out. Great newsletter too!

Costa Mesa: (The CAMP on Bristol near Baker) 2937 Bristol St., Costa Mesa, CA 92626 (714) 427-0410
Torrance: Rolling Hills Plaza (Crenshaw and PCH) 2533 Pacific Coast Hwy, Torrance, CA 90505 (310) 534-9683

Big 5 Sporting Goods

Their shoe and boot sales are good for rapidly growing new backpackers. Functional trail shoes (Hi-Tec) for around $30. Many items are closeouts or factory seconds so know how to properly select and fit hiking boots before going. Bring your own socks to try on trail shoes. Some incidental items such as Camp Suds may be available.

Wal Mart / Target

Good for many small items such as zip loc bags, bandanas, whistles, utility cord, insect repellant, lip balm, flashlights, etc. Hot tip: small travel size refillable dispenser bottles. These are great for repacking and carrying small quantities of liquids such as Camp Studs, syrups, cooking oil, and sunscreen.
