Backpack training hike for 1st time backpackers (both scouts AND parents) is this Saturday, 7:00am. We will meet at the Cerritos Park East, East Parking Lot, near the picnic shelters.
There is a change in location, the training hike will be in Signal Hill, starting on Temple Ave, just north of the Discovery Well Park entrance. It is an easy 15 minute drive from CPE. I would like to start hiking before it gets hot.
The reason I chose this location is because there is some very modest elevation gain, which more simulates our backpacking trip. My GPS watch indicated a total gain of 313 ft., with a net (low point to high point) of about 200 feet. Last year's backpacking trip had almost 1,800 ft elevation gain, and I am sure our October trip will have about 1,000 elevation gain. For the location of the hike, Google “Discovery Well Park, Signal Hill”.
We are still meeting at CPE, but start of the hike is on Temple Ave, just north of the Discovery Well Park entrance, street parking. Exit the Temple Ave on the 406 freeway and go south on Temple. Temple turns into Obispo, and you have to make a right on Hill and another right on Temple. We start at the X. Here is a map:
You'll pack your backpack as if you are going on a real backpacking trip, and according to the list given to you earlier: http://troop693.wikidot.com/backpacking-checklist. There will be a backpack inspection.
Some of the items include a your backpack, a wide brimmed hat, class C uniform (green T-shirt), no jeans, compass&whistle, hiking boots, hiking poles, sunblock, sun glasses, 2 full Nalgenes (or a hydration pack with two quarts of water), snacks, etc.
